The highest level of Cardiology in Joongboo area

Recently, the Korean society has been adapting to a much more Western diet and lifestyle, which causes an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, (diseases concerning the heart) in Korea. The cardiology department plays an important role in promoting the health of the people.

Cardiology department features

The 24-hour emergency care professor

It is the custom that senior residents treat patients, but in the case of a junior resident treating a patient, the senior residents should be consulted. If the case is very serious, professors are asked to handle it and in the process, residents can learn from the professor’s methods. This rule applies 24/7. Therefore the professors are required to have a separate cell phone with them at all times, in case of emergencies.

For example, an acute myocardial infarction patient is admitted to the emergency room at 2 o'clock in the morning, The professor of cardiology, nurses, and radiation technologists are called immediately and they can arrive at the hospital within 30 minutes. If the patient has to wait longer, the situation can change into an emergency coronary angioplasty within 1 hour, which will need an acute myocardial infarction treatment.

Of the 300 emergency cases over the past two years at Chungnam University Hospital's emergency room, there has been no need for thrombolytic treatment. This is an achievement in itself for the University Hospital.

A one-step service during ambulatory care

One of the reasons patients are reluctant to go to university hospitals is that tests are not usually done on one day, which requires the patients to frequently return to the hospital, and it also prolongs the results.

Fortunately this problem has been solved by the operating cardiac function laboratory and cardiovascular center in the cardiology department. Critical examination, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, exercise stress testing and echocardiography examinations can all be done on the same day. However the Holter examination and blood pressure tests still take 24-hours to get results.

Newest world-class treatment techniques

With the most recent non-invasive medical technology, it is possible to have less scarring after any surgery. In the past, only invasive surgical treatment was possible with congenital heart disease, atrial gravity defect and patent ductus arteriosus. Now it is possible to treat those problems with non-invasive surgery or even just with a balloon angioplasty. Annually about 1,000 patients get Cardiological treatments in our hospital. Carotid artery stenosis, the cause of the palsy, can be treated by Stent implantation without surgery, too. These treatment strategies are a global trend that the Chungnam National University Hospital's Cardiology department follows.
